There is more than one spacing decision

Draw and label the gap between neighboring board edges, the gap at end joints, and clearances at fixed obstructions or perimeter details. These serve different interfaces and may have different requirements. The distance between supports is another decision entirely; it should not be confused with a decking gap.

Mark the basis for each value on the layout. It may come from a product installation guide, a project detail or a manufacturer’s written response to the site conditions. If a value remains unresolved, leave it identified as an assumption rather than silently adopting a convenient number.

Account for the material and installation conditions

Wood’s relationship with moisture is a reason to ask about actual product condition and the installation environment. USDA guidance describes general moisture behavior; it does not prescribe one gap for every hardwood dock. Request the applicable spacing and handling instructions for the boards being supplied.

Composite and PVC also require their own product-specific instructions. Do not transfer a hardwood detail to another material category or use one manufacturer’s requirement for another product. Obtain current documentation for the exact supplied product before building.

Review the whole surface detail

Think through drainage and debris at borders, end joints and access panels. Review walking use and any project accessibility requirements with the responsible professional. Increasing a gap is not a substitute for resolving a detail that traps debris or blocks inspection.

Coordinate the last board row and perimeter treatment before cutting. A rectangular coverage calculation may produce a partial final row, while the design may need a specific border or edge condition. Resolve that in the layout, not by quietly changing all gaps on site to make the boards fit.

Use the calculator as a scenario tool

Enter the actual board width and your documented planning gap. The calculator rounds the number of rows up and assumes gaps between rows, without a perimeter gap. It does not select an installation gap, account for end gaps, or decide whether a ripped last board is acceptable.

Compare scenarios only when their assumptions are visible. After the final spacing and layout are approved, recalculate quantities and reconcile stock lengths with the supplier. Save the assumption sheet with the request so changes in the material total can be traced to an actual design decision.

Worked coverage example: why the final row matters

Take an illustrative rectangular zone 20 feet along the board direction and 8 feet across it. Enter an actual board width of 5.5 inches and a planning side gap of 0.25 inch. These are example inputs, not recommended installation dimensions. The calculator converts the crosswise width to 96 inches and computes rows as the ceiling of (96 + 0.25) divided by (5.5 + 0.25). The result is 17 rows.

Seventeen full-width boards plus sixteen example gaps would cover 97.5 inches. That exceeds the 96-inch zone width, so the layout needs a reviewed final-row or perimeter treatment. The tool reports 17 rows because it rounds up for coverage; it does not promise that every row can remain full width. Simply spreading or compressing the gaps to force a fit would change an installation detail that needs its own accepted basis.

At 20 feet per row, the illustrative net decking length is 340 linear feet. A visitor-entered 10 percent allowance adds 34 linear feet for a planning total of 374. Neither number is a board count. The length schedule still depends on the supplier’s product options, the accepted end joints and the cut plan. This is why spacing, coverage and purchasing are connected but separate steps.

Why does the formula add one gap to the zone width?

A run of rows has one fewer internal gap than it has boards. Algebraically, coverage is row count multiplied by board width, plus one less than row count multiplied by gap. Rearranging that expression produces (zone width + gap) divided by (board width + gap). Rounding upward supplies enough rows under those assumptions.

The model includes no gap outside the first or last row. If the accepted design has perimeter clearances, borders or other adjustments, reconcile the measured zone with those details before ordering. The formula is transparent so a reviewer can see exactly which geometry it does and does not represent.

Can I use the default gap on site?

No. The default exists to demonstrate the calculator. Obtain side, end and obstruction clearances from the actual product and project requirements. Keep the accepted values with the installation layout and update the planning model when they change.

The same caution applies to the material allowance. It is an editable planning assumption, not a universal waste percentage. A reviewed cut plan is the appropriate next step for purchasing.
