Record the dimensions that drive the decision

Ask for actual width, thickness, available length information and the edge profile of the proposed product. Record units explicitly. A nominal trade name helps identify a category but should not substitute for the actual dimensions used in a calculation.

Include groove details when using a concealed fastening system. Confirm compatibility with the exact clip rather than assuming that every grooved board is interchangeable. Keep the product reference next to the dimensions.

Use width for coverage and thickness for coordination

The calculator uses actual board width and a visitor-entered side gap to determine rows. Thickness is not part of that coverage formula, but it matters to the overall assembly and needs coordination with transitions and fastening details.

Do not infer allowable support spacing from thickness alone. Obtain the selected product’s installation requirements and the project’s structural details. A dimension table cannot replace those decisions.

Resolve lengths with a cut plan

A long run can require several boards and accepted end-joint details. The summed linear feet do not tell the supplier which lengths are needed. Show the intended runs, joints and special cuts on the layout.

Ask the supplier to reconcile proposed lengths with the plan and identify any change in quantity or layout. Keep an allowance labeled as an assumption until the cut plan is reviewed. This site does not make live length-availability claims.

Check before accepting a substitution

A replacement product with a different actual width changes row count and edge treatment. A different thickness or profile may affect transitions and attachment. Review these effects before treating an alternative as equivalent.

Save the accepted dimensions with the final request. Clear measurements and units prevent a nominal label from silently controlling a quantity or installation decision it cannot support.

Measure the profile, not just its product name

Record thickness and face width separately. For a rectangular board, face width determines how many rows cover a dock; thickness affects interfaces such as shore transitions, hatch covers and the selected fastening detail. A groove, eased edge or underside relief can introduce dimensions that a simple width-by-thickness description does not capture. Ask for a profile drawing when a clip or proprietary frame is involved.

Take measurements at several positions on representative boards and record the instrument, date and material condition. These observations describe the sample; they do not establish a supplier tolerance or acceptance rule. Obtain those separately. The USDA Wood Handbook explains that wood exchanges moisture with its surroundings, influencing physical properties. That is a reason to record condition alongside dimensions, not a basis for prescribing a universal dock gap.

Worked example: why a quarter inch changes the order

AI-assisted planning scenario — not a completed customer project. Consider a rectangular surface 8 feet across and 20 feet along the board run. With an assumed actual face width of 5.5 inches and a hypothetical 0.25-inch side gap, the row calculation is ceiling((96 + 0.25) / (5.5 + 0.25)) = 17 rows. At 20 feet per row, the field requires 340 linear feet before allowance.

If the selected profile is instead 5.25 inches wide, keeping the same illustrative gap gives 18 rows and 360 linear feet. Both arrangements cover the same 160-square-foot footprint. The difference is coverage geometry, not a waste percentage. The final row may require ripping; edge details and usable board lengths still need a cut plan. These gap values illustrate arithmetic and are not installation recommendations.
