Dock decking weight: information for the designer

Gather documented product weight and quantity information without treating an estimate as a flotation or structural check.

A decking weight estimate needs a documented product basis and matching quantity units. It is not a capacity check.

Geometry alone does not supply density. Decking weight is an input to professional review, not a flotation or structural capacity check.

Use a documented product basis

Ask the supplier for weight information for the actual proposed product, including units and the condition or basis of the figure. Keep measured, catalog and unsupported claims distinct. This site does not currently provide a verified species-density table.

Wood moisture relationships are one reason that an unlabeled number is not a complete weight basis. Record what the supplied figure represents instead of presenting it as an exact installed weight under all conditions.

Match quantity units to the weight units

A value per board, per linear foot and per unit volume requires a different quantity input. Confirm that the dimensions and units refer to the same product. Do not multiply deck area by a density value without the necessary dimensional conversion and a verified basis.

Keep hardware, framing, finishes and other components separate where the designer requires them. A decking-only figure is not the total weight of the dock assembly.

Give the information to the responsible professional

For floating docks, have the designer review material changes with flotation, stability, intended loads and connections. For fixed structures, the relevant structural review also belongs with the project team. This page does not establish an allowable load or reserve buoyancy.

Include uncertainty explicitly if product information is provisional. The designer can state what evidence is needed before selection rather than receiving a precise-looking number with no source.

Keep the final record consistent

After product or layout changes, update the quantity and weight information together. Keep the final product references and calculation basis with the accepted design records.

Use the material request to obtain the missing supplier information. The surface calculator remains useful for area and linear feet, but its output is not a weight estimate or engineering approval.

A unit-consistent weight worksheet

Use a documented product weight per linear foot when available: decking weight = installed linear feet × pounds per linear foot. If only density is supplied, first calculate actual solid volume: length in feet × width in inches × thickness in inches ÷ 144. Multiply cubic feet by density in pounds per cubic foot. A profiled or hollow product requires an appropriate net section or manufacturer weight; its bounding rectangle is not necessarily its material volume.

Keep a separate line for each board profile, border, hardware group and retained or replacement component. Shipping weight can include packaging and spare material that never becomes part of the installed structure. The USDA Wood Handbook treats density and related properties in the context of moisture; a density figure without its moisture basis should not silently become a project design load.

Worked example: geometry without an invented species density

AI-assisted planning scenario. Suppose the measured rectangular section is 1 inch thick by 5.5 inches wide, and the field schedule contains 340 linear feet. Its rectangular volume is 340 × 1 × 5.5 ÷ 144 = 12.99 cubic feet. No species weight follows from this number until a suitable density is documented. It does not establish the weight of Ipe, Cumaru or any product in the catalog.

If an independently supplied product weight is q pounds per linear foot, the same field weighs 340q pounds. This symbolic worksheet deliberately leaves the missing evidence visible. For a replacement, calculate both removed and added components on comparable bases; their difference is a material-change input, not proof of adequate reserve buoyancy.

Provide the designer with the product reference, quantity revision, condition basis and exclusions. The professional responsible for the floating system evaluates the consequences for flotation, trim, stability and intended loading. A change that appears modest in total weight can also change where weight is located.
